Brewing Soon in Baguio City

coffee beansOne of the many things I love about Baguio is its constant reinvention. Its people and environment are in a constant state of flux, alternating between embracing modernity and preserving tradition. It is this ability to adapt to the changing times that served as our inspiration for our latest venture at Camp John Hay (CJH). We strove to marry the serenity of nature with the bustling human energy of progress.

This desire led us to plant some 230,000 pine trees over the years to add to the 350,000 trees we were already given stewardship of. And now, we further that commitment by presenting to you the latest fruit of our labor: the Camp John Hay Arabica Coffee Plantation.

While this facility, operated by the Rocky Mountain Arabica Coffee Company (RMACC), is yet to be officially inaugurated  on December 20, I’d like to give you a sneak peek as to why this is a project that I am truly proud to have been part of bringing to life.

We have planted over 75,000 coffee plants on a 60-hectare land managed by RMACC. We see these plants providing substantial environmental and economic benefits for the community of my beloved City of Pines. The presence of these plants is expected to improve the city’s forest lands by thickening its existing lower canopy. Doing so will help prevent the occurrence of forest fires, landslides, and flash floods. It is also expected to improve the city’s air quality by absorbing an estimated 170 metric tons of carbon per hectare per year.

We also employed 160 farmers to help us start and keep this farm running. Just like in the past, we employed locals to give the local economy a boost and to give back to the people of this region. Again, the economic and environmental benefits of this undertaking are far-reaching and truly worth the effort.

This newest addition to Baguio’s green landscape is truly a showcase of the cooperation between all the shareholders. This is our shared triumph both commercially and environmentally. So the next time you venture up into this city, I encourage you to visit the Camp John Hay Arabica Coffee Plantation. Knowing the human and environmental factors of production that went into creating Rocky Mountain, I can tell you that a sip of this coffee won’t only taste good, it will make you feel good, too.
