ALTA MEDIA ICON AWARD

A dream to be heard led him to a radio station and into a career that would make him a household name – a trusted and respected pillar of the broadcast industry.

“Even before Rey Langit attained phenomenal success in his broadcasting career, he has shown a steady and quiet dedication to seeing to the needs of people who are left unheard and whose interests lay forgotten. His groundbreaking program committed to bridging the gap among thousands of overseas workers and their families, “To Saudi With Love” made sure that though they are thousands of miles apart, they remain connected to each other.

At that time cellphones, gadgets, and text-messaging technology were not invented yet he already provided free overseas calls to tens of thousands of Filipinos who wished to send their messages of love and inspiration to their hardworking family members abroad and helped families stay whole despite the distance that separated them. Because of the program’s significant contribution to helping keep families united, “To Saudi With Love” and Rey Langit was awarded by Pope John Paul II as a “radio program with a heart and service to mind kind,” the only radio show given such a distinction. The Pontiff himself awarded Rey Langit with this honor during his visit to the country in 1980. With this program, Rey Langit was able to reach out to the rapidly growing community of overseas Filipino workers and was the first broadcast personality to ever recognize that the new sector had needs that must be met by the public and the government. To this day, he has remained committed and dedicated to their cause and has helped innumerable individuals who have sought a better life away from the comfort of their homes and their families by aiding in repatriation efforts, helping victims of illegal recruitment, and assisting workers in distress. He has traveled to many countries and has seen the plight of overseas Filipino workers with his own eyes. Most of the problems that they face are repatriation and being wrongfully imprisoned in foreign jails.”

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIES

House Speaker Allan Peter Cayetano:

Mr. Ruperto “Jun” Nicdao -President, Manila Broadcasting Co., DZRH and KBP President

Sa aking Kumparing Rey Langit na hindi tumatanda, mukhang 40 years old parin hanggang ngayon, mula nung nakilala ko si paring Rey, naging kumapare ko ganyan parin ang itsura nya hindi tumatanda at still energetic.

My message to you paring Rey on your 50th golden birthday, hindi ko alam kung ilan ang plus nun pero I wish you all the best in your life, all the success I know you already been an award winning sa lahat ng mga prestigious Award giving body, a very successful broadcaster known all over in the country but I wish you more of god’s blessing ah I wish you good health, although baka hindi na kailangan because ah napaka bata parin ng itsura mo paring Rey. But I wish you good health and long life. Ah oo okay actually una kong nakilala si Rey when I join Manila Broadcasting – DZRH in 1977, ang unang memorize ko kay paring Rey of course is he was, una sikat na sikat na sya nun noh he at that time he was of course one of the key anchor of the station, hindi pa siya drama manager nun tanda ko kasi si Froilan Villegas pa. He was very famous as a drama talent, drama director and everything so sikat na sikat nun at he rose up the organization being a drama talent, news director and eventually station manager of DZRH and Vice President, the success of DZRH we owes a lot to paring Rey, you know RH was a the very dominant station during this time and it was one of the reasons of maybe the main reason why RH is successful is because of paring Rey so on behalf of the family of Manila broadcasting company we still owe you, you know every time I meet anyone pagsinabi kong DZRH, Rey Langit parin, you know he is the iconic personality of DZRH so again I wish you all the best in life maraming maraming salamat Rey sa ating friendship sa ating pagkukumpare and Congratulations!

LEGACY

DZRH became the birthplace of a radio program that would later have a major contribution to Philippine History. We fear nothing and no one because this program gathers its strength from the people… “People Power!” These are the words that I would open the program “Metro Manila Banat” with, which I co-hosted with the late Pareng Caloy Castro. I first uttered the words “People Power” in 1975, during Martial Law.

After a decade, in 1986, the phrase “People Power” which was first heard over our program became the by-word in EDSA when people marched on the streets to overthrow the government. The phrase spread like wildfire, all over the country and all over the world. It was People Power that ousted Ferdinand Marcos and Slobadan Milosevic of Yugoslavia. People Power changed the course of history for Nepal, Myanmar, Romania, Czech Republic, Korea, Germany, and Egypt.

Although it has been several years since my late partner Pareng Caloy drew his last breath, our small contribution to national, and indeed to global history, our legacy of PEOPLE POWER, remains.

As they say, The Rest Is History!
